1. Structure and aims of the project

The Translation Studies Bibliography (TSB) is an international project designed to make available a modern research tool for interdisciplinary research with relation to Translation and Interpreting Studies. The project is a collaborative effort between the Lessius Hogeschool (Dept. of Translation and Interpreting) in Antwerp and the European Society for Translation Studies (EST) as content managers, and John Benjamins Publishing Company as producer.    Lessius Hogeschool Antwerp

The Editorial Board (Javier Franco, Yves Gambier, Daniel Gile, José Lambert, Gideon Toury, Luc van Doorslaer) helps to maintain the quality standards and scope of the project.
TSB includes bibliographical references and abstracts from numerous disciplines pertaining to T/I research. On the basis of a newly developed and detailed conceptual tree of T/I studies, all entries will be categorized through a key word system, creating a fully searchable instrument. The first edition of this on-line electronic bibliography is planned for release in the Fall of 2004. The bibliography will be updated annually and will be made accessible on a subscription basis.

2. Criteria for inclusion

Nature of the publications: The TSB abstracts and indexes scholarly publication with relevance to the field of T/I studies. The following categories of publications are included: journal articles, monographs, (articles from) collective volumes, reviews, reference materials, dissertations and unpublished manuscripts. The bibliography does not index translations or dictionaries, unless relevant to research in T/I studies.

Fields and disciplines: A topical map of the discipline has been set up for the purpose of this bibliography. In our working definition, Translation & Interpreting is considered as a broad field of transfer and mediation, containing aspects of intra- and interlingual translation, adaptation, interpreting, reformulation/rewording, localisation/multimedia translation, language mediation and terminology/documentation.
Because of the interdisciplinary nature of T/I studies, we consider publications from other disciplines (such as semiotic studies, communication studies, linguistics, sociology, psychology, etc.) but only to the extent in which they are relevant and of interest to T/I studies.
The Content Manager decides on inclusion or exclusion in the database, where necessary after consultation with the Editorial Board.

Languages of publication / geographical areas: Although in principle there is no restriction on the language or the place of publication, we have to accept that some languages and geographical areas are more difficult to cover than others. Contacts are sought to cover for instance Eastern European, South American, Japanese, and Chinese literature within the scope of the bibliography.

Period: The TSB intends to have broad coverage of current literature. It was decided to start with the last decade and work backwards in time gradually, in addition to covering new publications.

4. Collaboration with other bibliographical initiatives

Our aim is to actively collaborate with other initiators of bibliographies in T/I research to avoid duplication and to make it a joint effort to compile a high quality, user-friendly, comprehensive research tool. Other initiators willing to cooperate so far are Javier Franco (University of Alicante) with BITRA/Bibliography of Interpreting and Translation Studies, Daniel Gile (University of Lyon II) with CIRIN/Conference Interpreting Research Information Network, and Gideon Toury (Tel Aviv University) with TRANSST.
